RBL.JP Services

Introduction

Along with the expansion of the internet there has been a huge increase in the amount of unsolicited e-mail (spam) being sent to people. Here at RBL.JP we offer several free services (Real-time Black Lists - databases containing IPs, domains, addresses, URLs etc. related to spam) to help combat spam. Below is information on these services which help you to detect and reject spam.

By using this RBL it means to go against the two long-held common policies of telecommunications industry which are that communication privacy must be protected and the freedom of communication must not be interferred with. Some of the actual operations involved in using the services here at RBL.JP include the analyzing e-mails for addresses and rejecting connections from specific addresses recorded as being the source of spamming activity.

A word to mail administrators, if you decide you do not mind going against these policies please first follow the explanations below on how to use RBL.JP's services. For those who do not agree with this please do not use our services.

Services and settings

RBL.JP supports the following types of RBLs (Real-time Blocking Lists).

  • virus.rbl.jp
  • The Anti-virus RBL service helps reject virus-infected mail sent directly from PCs which are virus-infected themselves. One recent kind of spam works by first infecting a PC with a virus, it then takes control of it (with no obvious signs so the user can remain completely unaware their PC is being manipulated for evil purposes) and is used by spammers remotely to send their spam. Stop yourself from becoming a spammer without knowing it by blocking mail from such virus-infected machines.
To use with Sendmail, or another MTA, please look here for the basic settings.

To use with SpamAssassin, please look here for how to configure.

To see whether or not your PC or server is registered is registered in this RBL please go here.
IPs/hostnames registered in this RBL will automatically be deleted after 2 days.

  • short.rbl.jp
  • This service is helpful to reject spam sent from ADSL or PPP connections which have dynamic IP addresses. Spam from zombie PCs (virus-infected computers being used to send spam) can be stopped with this service. Also, this is also helpful to reject spam sent from FLETS (Japan) connections and internet cafes.

  • url.rbl.jp (for use with SpamAssassin only)
  • Incoming e-mails' bodies are scanned for URLs and e-mail addresses by SpamAssassin and if there is a domain is associated with a spammer in the RBL then the e-mail is then marked as spam. Most recent spam have inconsistencies between the domain in the From: field and the domain inside the body of the spam. However, the domain part of the URL usually stays the same if it's the same spam. The only part that is changed is the sub-domain. This change is done to try and escape being detected as spam. url.rbl.jp can help you still detect spam even if such methods are used to try and fool other spam detection systems.
Please look here for the settings.

  • This service helps detect spam by checking to see whether the domain of URL in e-mail bodies are from any of the many free dynamic DNS services available on the net. These dynamic DNS services allow spammers to startup their own server and send spam using their dynamic DNS service-provided hostname in the spam's URL.

    Recruiting of volunteers

If you are plagued by lots of spam or simply would like to help in our fight against those evil spammers please join us by becoming a volunteer.

Especially in the case of url.rbl.jp your job becomes easier. Up until now everytime SpamAssassin users received such a spam they would have to manually register each URL one-by-one in their local SpamAssassin configuration based on the amount of prohibited words and content in the spam. This is no longer necessary because once you register any URL, the domain is in extracted and stored in the RBL .

What's more is that others can benefit from the data you contribute to RBL.JP and also you contribute to the general reduction of spam in today's world.

The following are the criteria for volunteers:

    1) For people who want to volunteer for virus.rbl.jp and short.rbl.jp, you must show that you are able to analyse virus-infected e-mail and spam headers and determine the the source from where the mail came.

    2) For people who want to volunteer for url.rbl.jp, you must be able to visit the URL in the spam's body and determine correctly whether or not it is actually a spammer's site.

We of course welcome volunteers who want to do both.

To apply please attach and submit the following to volunteer AT mail.rbl.jp (replace AT with @):

    1) For virus.rbl.jp/short.rbl.jp; two or more examples of a virus-infected e-mail or spam (including the header) and identify the source address which should be registered in the RBL. The source address should be the very origin of the spam, whether that be an actual mail server or the client terminal from which the spam was sent.

    2) For url.rbl.jp; two or more examples of a spam, identify the domain name of the relevant URL and explain why that URL should be registered.

NOTE: We will not accept volunteer requests from free mail services such as Yahoo, Hotmail etc.

When applying please give a brief self-introduction, mentioning your name, country, profession and if you belong to any relevant organizations. For cases where we cannot identify the volunteer clearly we will refuse such applications. This is a necessary precation to prevent spammers trying to get access to the RBL.

We will not release any personal information to any other parties.

In order for volunteers to be able to exchange information we will add you to our volunteer mailing list. You may request to have a free mail service account set as the e-mail address for your mailling list subscription.

Successful applicants will get information sent to them with regards to how to register data in the RBL.

For dyndns.rbl.jp, all volunteers may notify us by e-mail if they come across a spammer using a dynamic DNS service and we will do the registering ourselves.

We welcome also any general enquiries to the above e-mail address.
